Xiaohusai Puer Tea

The most typical and objective ancient tea tree is in Xiaohusai. Looking around here, the tree with a girth over one meter can be seen everywhere, maybe in front of the house or on the slope. The centuries-old tea-planting history of Shuangjiang county(双江县)showed vividly here.

Xiaohusai is populated largely by Lahu ethnic minority,(拉祜族)and makes up 70% of the total population. Lahu people(拉祜人)lives at Liangzi and Wazi stockade(梁子寨和洼子寨), those two stockades are so close to each other, and it has the largest area and the most age-old ancient tea garden here. The ancient tea garden of Liangzi stockade(梁子寨)is best-preserved in Mengku town(勐库镇)or in Shuagjiang county.(双江县)Those trees with the girth over one meter and the height over 5 meters are at least covered areas over 300 acres. Besides, more than ten ancient tea trees’ girth are over 1.5 meters. The tree spreads widely with its root twists and the branches circles, this kind of morphology can’t be formed within 200 or 300 years. So it must be planted in Ming dynasty or at an earlier time. Although Xiaohusai lacks of access to transportation, it still has the largest area of ancient tea garden.

Liangzi stockade(梁子寨)is a distinctive ancient tea village, almost every family has planted the tea trees. The green and leafy tea trees gather around the rows of houses, so you can’t tell whether the stockade was built in the tea grove or the tree planted in the stockade. Lahu people (拉祜人)works with the fragrance of tea during the day, and falls asleep with the tea aroma at night. They enjoys the blessing of the tea and gets paid by selling tea every year.

The other big tree garden of Xiaohusai is near Chashanhe.(茶山河)And there is a three-kilometer long ancient path from Liangzi stockade(梁子寨) to Chashanhe,(茶山河) and the fields on both sides are full of tea. The tea garden along the path was planted from 1958, and some from the Republic period. The tea trees which planted in Republic period had very thick trunk like the rim of a bowl, but those trees had been dwarfed. The thick and short stump sprouts out flourishing buds and leaves, and the tight velvet buds attracts people’s admiration at first sight. The upper tea garden has been connected to the virgin forest, and the lower to the edge of the paddy field at the foot of the hill. There are many old tea trees along Chashanhe’s(茶山河)earth ridge, which encircled by the abandoned trees and wild rattans. So people can’t go inside for tea plucking.
